Tips for Sleeping Comfortably with Hand-Tied Hair Extensions

Before and after of ombre blonde hair extensions that are properly cared for while sleeping

One of the most commonly asked questions we hear Whitney Evans Beauty is:

“How do I sleep without damaging my hair extensions?”

That’s a great question and one that we’re very happy to answer.

Since the tossing and turning associated with sleeping can lead to damage-causing tangles and knots, it’s important to follow a few simple steps to protect your hair extensions.

Keep reading to learn how you can sleep more comfortably with hand-tied hair extensions!

Dry Your Hair Before Going To Bed

A nice shower at the end of the day is a wonderful way to relax.

Yet, wet hair and a good night’s sleep is not a good combination for hair extensions.

Sleeping with wet hair is an easy way to damage natural hair and your hair extensions.

Why?

Since water can make hair more fragile, it’s prone to problems when it’s wet. Mix in all of the flipping and flopping we make during sleep and it makes matters worse.

When hair’s not thoroughly dried before bedtime, it’s susceptible to a variety of issues, including matting, damaged cuticles, scalp irritation, itchiness and dandruff. Plus, wet hair can result in unpleasant odors when mixed with sweat.

For extensions, wet hair can lead to painful and damaging knots and tangles.

If you prefer to shower at night before bedtime, it’s important to make sure your hair and hair extensions are completely dry before going to sleep.

Brush Your Hair To Prevent Hair Extension Damage

Brushing your hair and hair extensions is one of the best ways to prevent naturally occurring tangles.

To prevent tangles from occurring and damaging your extensions, it’s important to brush your hair regularly throughout the day. Yet, it’s especially important to brush it before bedtime.

Spending a few minutes brushing your hair before going to bed helps remove any tangles that may have formed during your day. If you go to bed with tangled hair extensions, you could wake up with multiple tangles that are extremely painful and difficult to unravel.

Additionally, if you shower before bedtime, brushing your hair and hair extensions is a great way to help dry and untangle your wet hair.

Braid Your Hair Before Bedtime

After you’re brushed and untangled your hair and hair extensions, it’s time to prepare your hair for a full night’s rest.

To reduce the risks of waking up with damaged hair extensions, simply tie your hair in a braid or loose ponytail with a soft hair scrunchie that is made from velvet or silk material

These two options help prevent your strands from tangling. Plus, they minimize the amount of time you’ll spend brushing your hair each morning. That means you can greet your day faster while looking fantastic!

Invest In Silk Accessories

What you rest your head on is critical when you have hair extensions.

High-thread cotton pillowcases may seem soft to the touch. However, this and other fabrics cause friction when you change positions while sleeping. That friction could potentially damage your hair extensions.

To reduce damage-causing friction, it’s best to make the switch to silk pillowcases. They’re smooth texture helps prevent sleep-causing tangles.

In addition to changing your pillowcases, it’s also vital to cover your hair and hair extensions completely. This helps keep your extensions in one place and prevents them from moving around while you sleep.

When choosing a head covering like a bonnet, cap or scarf, silk is always the go-to choice. If you can’t find a silk covering, a satin scarf or cap works, too.

Silk head covers are also incredibly beneficial when you’re traveling, Since most hotels use traditional linens, a silk cap or bonnet provides the protection your hair extensions require.

Use an Overnight Conditioner

The last step for sleeping comfortably and protecting your hair extensions overnight is to use a quality hair conditioner before going to sleep. One of our team experts would gladly recommend the perfect product for you.

Before braiding your hair, simply apply a bit of condition to the ends and middle of your hair extensions. Be careful not to apply the condition to the hand-tied wefts as this could loosen them.

This simple application helps keep your hair extensions more flexible and prevents them from getting tangled while you sleep.

Best of all, you only have to use an overnight conditioner once a week to be effective (unlike all of the other steps which should be followed every evening).
